Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area is home to 274 species of animals, with seven species listed as ‘vulnerable’ or ‘near threatened’, including the koala, powerful owl and grey-headed flying-fox, along with 24 internationally protected migratory bird species.

The area is ideal for short or long walks as there are numerous trails to choose from. With flat level tracks and boardwalks it is suitable for prams and all fitness levels. It is also great for bike riding or trail running if that is your thing. It is the perfect spot to get up close to native wildlife or do some birdwatching.

Walk the kangaroo trail and see an abundance of kangaroos feeding, lazing and socialising with each other in the shade or out in the open areas. Looking up in the tree as you walk the koala trail you may spot a koala. The Melaleuca Boardwalk Circuit is a really immersive experience and showcases the beauty of the wetlands.

There are plenty of shady spots for a picnic just bring your picnic blanket. Unfortunately there are no toilets or drinking water in the area. Also good to note, no dogs allowed.

Toddler Review

This is a great spot to take your toddler back to nature. The walking tracks are flat and well maintained so your toddler can run free. It was really great to be able to stand back and watch them discover and explore. We walked the Kangaroo Trail and saw heaps of Kangaroos and even walked up to a group until we were only about 5 metres away.

We did not spot any koalas in the trees, on the koala trail but had fun looking. We had a picnic off this trail under the big shady eucalyptus trees. This was really nice and highly recommend you give it a go, just bring a picnic blanket with you as there are no picnic facilities.

The Melaleuca Boardwalk Circuit was really beautiful with so much to look at enjoy. Harper and Fletcher loved walking and running along the boardwalk.

I highly recommend taking a pram on your first visit to help carry your stuff and if the kids get tired during your walk. Once you have visited you can better decide whether to come back with ride on trikes, bikes or scooters for the toddlers.

It is a wetland so expect Mozzies and if you are like me and seem to always attract them, avoid the dark clothes and pop on some insect repellant before leaving home.

Although I alway like to go places that have the option of a toilet, this is a conservation area so I get it. Don’t let the lack of facilties turn you away as this is a really beautiful spot to visit.

What to pack (suggestions)

  • Hats and Sunscreen
  • Picnic Blanket
  • Snacks or Packed Lunch
  • Full Water Bottles
  • Insect Repellant and avoid wearing dark clothes to avoid the Mozzies
  • Pram or Stroller would make the visit a lot easier
